Will Pitt blitz Utah?
Pitt football Q&A with Paul Zeise
Monday, August 30, 2010

Q: Do you expect to see Pitt try to surprise Utah with a couple early blitzes in game one?

Ben Shockey, Syracuse, Ind.

ZEISE: Ben, you've been around these parts long enough -- what do you think? I'll be shocked if the Panthers blitz more than a handful of times the first month of the season!

Seriously, I think what we've seen from Dave Wannstedt is this -- he believes in what he does and he doesn't deviate too far it. And we all know he hates the idea of blitzing so I'd say, no, we will not see many blitzes against the Utes, or any other team for that matter.

Q: How can Utah have a new quarterback if their starter was the MVP of the Poinsettiaa Bowl last year? Do some research before talking trash about another team!

Frank Liston, Salt Lake City, Utah

ZEISE: Oh, well I'm glad you set me straight, I mean, since he was the MVP of the Poinsettia Bowl, he must be a grizzled veteran ... or maybe not.

The fact of the matter is Jordan Wynn is a true sophomore who only started four games last year and then started the bowl game and didn't make his first appearance of the year until the eighth game of the season. He has less than one-half of one season worth of experience and truth be told he's appeared in exactly one more game than Pitt's Tino Sunseri. And in the two games he played against legitimate teams, BYU and TCU, Utah lost, so the idea that he is now battle tested is a bit of a stretch.

You are technically correct, Wynn is not brand spanking new and has some experience, but emphasis is on the word some, as in, he played games 9 through 13 and is still only in his second year in the program. He's never gone through this process of being the starter to start the season and he's never played a game where a team has had an entire offseason to dissect his tendencies, either. He also never gone into a season or a game with expectations on his shoulders -- he has never been through this process before. Pitt has a left guard, Chris Jacobson, who is a redshirt junior, appeared in all 13 of Pitt's games last year and started the Meineke bowl game and played extremely well I might add -- and guess what -- he is still considered a new starter in my book because he's never been through this process before.

As for the part about me talking trash -- give me a break. Remind me again where I ever even hinted that Jordan Wynn isn't a good player -- I just said he's new to this experience because he is and that his inexperience could be a factor in the game. Think about it this way - if he would have started from the first game last season he'd be starting his sixth game -- would you still be calling him a new starter? Most likely yes and that doesn't change just because there was an offseason in between his fifth and sixth start.

Q: How much has last year's Cincinnati debacle affected the psyche of this year's workouts/camp?

Melissa Martino, Pittsburgh

ZEISE: I'd say it hasn't really done much one way or the other. It is something that is talked about, it is something players have used as motivation, but there aren't any lingering negative feelings about it. It is just one of those things that happened, the team has moved on. Like Dom DeCicco said in one of my recent articles -- they are aware that they were one point away from the Big East title and that has pushed them to work a little harder and do a little more every time they've taken the field since then.
