Celebrations Spotlight: Julia Wesolowski and Daniel Kysela
Tuesday, August 24, 2010

Julia Wesolowski, 24, and Daniel Kysela, 25, wed on May 15, 2010. The couple now resides in Scott Township. Their paid wedding announcement ran in the Post-Gazette on Tuesday, August 17.

Q: How did you meet?

Julia: We were both interns on the Swann for Governor Campaign in 2006. Dan was a history student at Pitt and I was an accounting/political science major at Chatham College. There was just something special about Dan that made me want to get to know him better.

Dan: I loved Julia's laugh and thought that she was beautiful.

Q: Where did you each grow up?

Julia: Jefferson Hills

Dan: North Riverside (A suburb of Chicago)

Q: Who proposed? How?

Julia: Dan proposed on New Year's Eve 2007. We were at his family's house in Michigan and he took me on a path where he placed candles in the snow. When we got to the end of the path, there was an extension cord and he told me to plug it in. We I did, a sign that he had made lit up and read, "Will You Marry Me?" in Christmas lights.

Q: Where were you married? Why did you choose that site?

Julia: We were married at St. Paul's Cathedral in Oakland. We chose it because it is just a gorgeous church and because Dan's great-grandmother also got married there.

Q: Where was the reception and honeymoon? Why did you choose those sites?

Julia: The reception was at Jay Verno Studios on the South Side. It is a film studio and the space there is unique. It's like a blank canvas! Needless to say, the lighting was fabulous. For our honeymoon, we spent a week at Sandals Royal Bahamian in the Bahamas. It was great because the flight was short, but you felt like you were a world away.

Q: What was the best part? The worst?

Julia: The best part of our wedding was seeing so many family members and friends together. The mood at the reception was so joyful and everyone had a wonderful time. The worst part was that the day was over so fast!

Q: Which guest traveled the farthest?

Dan: A friend of mine came all the way from the Netherlands where he is stationed with the Army.

Q: What was new, blue, borrowed at your wedding?

Julia: New and blue was an aquamarine and diamond ring that my father purchased. Borrowed was my great-grandmother's broach which I pinned on my bouquet.

Q: What was the funniest thing that happened?

Julia: We had a photo booth at the reception with all kinds of props. Watching the crazy outfits that people were putting on to go in there was hilarious! The activity in the photo booth was streamed onto the TV's in the reception areas. That was extremely entertaining.

Q: Who was your favorite wedding vendor? Why?

Julia: Our wedding planner, Katherine Elise Shaw, of Trends To Traditions, was instrumental in planning the wedding. We hired her shortly after we became engaged. Dan was deployed to Iraq for a year with his Army National Guard unit and Kat stayed with us for the 2+ years of preparation. Also, the food from Medure's Catering was luscious and the flowers from Della Robbia Florist were spectacular. If we could list every vendor here, that would be more appropriate because they were all wonderful.

Q: What's the most creative wedding present you were given?

Julia: A friend's mom crocheted an American flag blanket.

Q: What is one item of your spouse's that you wish you could throw out?

Julia: His alarm clock because it makes the most horrendous noise.

Dan: Her many pairs of shoes!

Q: What is one thing that you do solely because you love your spouse?

Julia: Run half marathons!

Dan: Watch horrible reality TV.

Any other details:

Julia: My Croatian heritage and Dan's Czech heritage were represented through the Croatian band, "The Gipsy Stringz Orchestra" which played outside the church and during the cocktail hour and dinner. I surprised Dan with a groom's cake from Charm City Cakes that detailed the two other things he loves in life besides me: running and the Army. Also, we donated all of the bridal dance money to Soldier's Angels.
