Pittsburgh stations received more Emmy nominations this year
Wednesday, August 18, 2010

The 2010 Mid-Atlantic Regional Emmy Award nominations were announced Tuesday night at simultaneous events in Harrisburg, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. And this year, Pittsburgh stations made a better showing. That's what happens when local stations actually enter the competition.

For years, Pittsburgh stations have had varying reactions to the Emmys -- ignoring, embracing, boycotting. But this year, representatives of KDKA, WPXI and WTAE said each entered as an organization; due to financial constraints, WQED did not enter as an organization, but employees entered on their own.

Pittsburgh outlets saw their nomination haul increase from a total of 25 nominations last year to 44 for 2010.

As usual, WQED had the most nominations with 16, but not by much. KDKA came in second with 14 nods, WPXI had eight and WTAE scored six.

In some categories, Pittsburgh outlets were no-shows -- feature news report, serious feature, human interest, politics/government -- but that's not surprising, as those are reporting categories where Pittsburgh stations too rarely venture.

The 28th regional Emmys, honoring work from stations and individuals in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, will be held Sept. 25 at Loews Philadelphia Hotel.
