The Steelers completed their first week of training camp the way they began in the spring, with Byron Leftwich leading the way at quarterback.

Coach Mike Tomlin has not publicly announced his starting quarterback for the first four games that Ben Roethlisberger will miss but he has been consistent by his actions. Leftwich is No. 1, and although Dennis Dixon had an excellent first week throwing the ball in Latrobe, he is likely to remain there.

"I feel good, man. I love this system," Leftwich said of Bruce Arians' offense. "It allows the quarterback to make plays. It allows you to use your mind. You got to make decisions out there. There's a lot they put on the quarterback to make and I like being in that situation.

"I feel real good about it. I feel real good about this situation. I feel real good about this offense and I feel real good about this team."

Mike Wallace, who moved into Santonio Holmes' job at split end, keeps in touch with the Super Bowl XLIII MVP who was traded to the New York Jets in April. Holmes delayed his arrival at the Jets' training camp to be with his son, who had surgery to remove his spleen in Atlanta, surgery necessitated because of sickle cell.

"I talked to him last week," Wallace said. "He was telling me how he was excited about everything. He's taking everything a lot more serious now. I know he can make a lot of money. He has all he talent in the world, it's crazy all the talent he has. If he can just get calmed down, the sky's the limit."

Punter Daniel Sepulveda handled the kickoff chores at practice Friday night at Latrobe Stadium.

"I like that Daniel Sepulveda may provide us with a legitimate option there," Tomlin said.

Safety Troy Polamalu and receiver Hines Ward were held out of practice to give them a rest, Tomlin said.

Defensive end Ra'Shon Harris (foot) and safety Tuff Harris (shoulder) left practice with injuries.

The Steelers have a morning practice closed to the public and then leave on buses for Canton, Ohio, for the induction of defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Their next open practice is Sunday, 3-5 p.m. ... More than 300 women from 23 states will take to the fields at Saint Vincent College Sunday morning for the annual Steelers women's training camp. The women will be put through various drills on offense, defense and in the kicking game. Former Steelers Mark Bruener, Edmund Nelson, Craig Wolfley and Dwayne Woodruff will conduct the one-day camp.
