Fort Pitt Tunnel closure causes massive backup
Saturday, July 31, 2010

Parkway West traffic was bumper to bumper for miles today as motorists struggled with the closure of the outbound Fort Pitt Tunnel for the weekend to permit workers to install ceiling tile.

Traffic was moving at a crawl onto the Fort Pitt Bridge and onto West Carson Street and through the recommended detour via the West End Circle and then back onto Interstate 376 west. Ditto for the outbound lanes of the Liberty Bridge, the route sought by many motorists who sought to head south instead on West Liberty Avenue.

The tunnel closed at 10 p.m. Friday and will remain closed through 6 a.m. Monday.

But there was a bit of good traffic news today--the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced this morning that all restrictions on the Parkway West in Robinson had been lifted as work there was completed ahead of schedule.

The Parkway West had been reduced to a single lane beginning Friday night as crews sawed and sealed the highway between the Steubenville Pike (Route 22/30 Exit 60) and Robinson Towne Center (Exit 59) interchanges.

The work was expected to last until at least noon today and possibly tonight and into tomorrow morning. But the work was completed around 8 a.m. and all restrictions were lifted.
