Colbert signs five-year extension with Steelers
Thursday, July 29, 2010

Besides coming to terms with their second-round draft pick Wednesday night, the Steelers also signed one more key member of the organization and promoted two more in their front office with other job titles changing hands.

Kevin Colbert, their director of football operations since 2000, signed a five-year contract extension. And Omar Khan, who joined the Steelers' front office in 2001, has been named their director of business and administration. The Steelers announced Colbert's contract extension on their website, but Khan's was among promotions they made without announcing them. As they have done many times in the past -- most famously when Dan Rooney and later his son Art became their president -- the Steelers buried the information in their new media guide.

Khan, 33, has been the Steelers' chief negotiator since joining them from the New Orleans Saints. He was one of three finalists to become general manager of the Seattle Seahawks this year. His job, previously described as business and football administration coordinator, essentially will remain the same with varied responsibilities that include running training camp. But in the Steelers' organizational chart, the term "director" means "boss" and more authority in that area.

Art Rooney also promoted Bob Tyler from controller to director of finance. Mark Hart, who had been their director of business, is now their director of planning and development. Several other minor front-office titles were changed.

"We are very pleased to announce that Kevin Colbert will remain with the Steelers for at least several more years," Rooney said on his team's website. "Kevin is without question one of the best in the NFL at his job and we are fortunate that he will continue to lead our football operations into the future."

Said Colbert, "I am very thankful to Art and Mr. [Dan] Rooney for the opportunity to continue my career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Our organization will be faced with many challenges in the coming season and beyond. I look forward to working with the Rooneys and Coach [Mike] Tomlin as we pursue our only acceptable goal -- a Super Bowl title."
