Meetings address job reductions, service cuts at West Penn
Thursday, July 08, 2010

Elected officials and community activists held a pair of meetings in Bloomfield on Wednesday to address impending job cuts and service reductions at West Penn Hospital.

West Penn Allegheny Health System announced last week that it's consolidating some services at Allegheny General Hospital on the North Side and West Penn Hospital in Bloomfield. About 1,500 jobs will be lost, most of them in Bloomfield.

Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato and Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl were among the officials who attended an 8 a.m. meeting convened by Bloomfield-Garfield Corp, and a 9 a.m. meeting convened by Bloomfield Citizens Council.

Officials talked about how to minimize job losses, make use of empty space in the West Penn Hospital building and ensure the health system's long-term health. No concrete proposals emerged from the meetings.
