I had the pleasure last week of meeting, at Penn Brewery, Eric Bierker, who traveled to Pittsburgh as part of his quest to visit 40 Pennsylvania brewpubs in 40 days. The Lancaster high school counselor earned his Ph.D., and this is his wife-allowed reward. Read about his travels at http://40brews40days.wordpress.com.
Speaking of Penn Brewery: Beer made and bottled on the North Side is in the market.
Meanwhile, the Hofbrauhaus at SouthSide Works is again holding its Masskrugstemmen, a stein-holding contest. Competitors will stand on the stage and each hold an arm out with a full stein (3 pounds) until two finalists remain. The competitions are slated for July 8, 15, 22 and 29, with eight finalists competing on Aug. 5 (all at 10 p.m.). The local winner goes to New York City to compete with winners from the Hofbrauhauses in Newport, Ky., and Las Vegas on Sept. 25, and the champion wins an all-expenses-paid trip to visit the Hofbrauhaus in Munich (hofbrauhauspittsburgh.com).
Thirsty for a Duke? Local lawyer and businessman Mark Dudash formed the Duquesne Bottling Works to resurrect the Duquesne Beer brand, which was last brewed in the early 1970s. His take on "the Prince of Pilsener" is being made and bottled at the City Brewing plant in Latrobe, and it should be available by August. July 24, Beer on the Bay returns to Erie's bayfront. Sponsored by Erie Brewing Co. (Eric Bierker stopped there, too), it takes over Burger King Amphitheater at Liberty Park that Saturday for two sessions: noon to 3 p.m. and 4 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 that day (eriebrewingco.com).
It's not until Sept. 11, but people already are talking about the fourth Steel City Big Pour, held at and benefiting Construction Junction in Point Breeze. Eight new breweries bring the total to 32 so far who will sample their wares, along with eats from area restaurants, over two sessions (noon to 3 and 5 to 8 p.m.). Tickets -- $55 or $25 for designated driver -- go on sale at 9 a.m. Aug. 2 (constructionjunction.org/pages/bigpour).
