Few high school athletic programs can match the stellar effort recorded by five of Mt. Lebanon's teams for the just-completed school year.
When Geena Badolato struck out Central Bucks South second baseman Haileigh Stock for the final out Friday in the Blue Devils' 1-0 victory in the PIAA Class AAAA softball championship at Shippensburg University, the senior left-hander notched a perfect game in her final high school contest and handed her team a 23-3 record.
The victory, the second PIAA championship for Mt. Lebanon in the 2009-10 year, capped a remarkable year for the school's teams.
The Blue Devils' girls' basketball team won its second consecutive PIAA Class AAAA title with a record of 29-2 and stands at 60-2 for the past two seasons. Both Mt. Lebanon teams won WPIAL titles in their respective sports as did the boys' basketball (26-2, PIAA quarterfinals), boys' soccer (19-2-1, PIAA first round) and girls' volleyball (19-2, PIAA semifinals) teams.
"It was the absolute perfect way to end the season," Badolato said. "I put so much work into it, so it was the best way to end it for me. You couldn't ask for anything better."
Her coach, Nicole Fajtak, was just as pleased.
"It's going to take some time before a lot of us realize what has happened," said the seventh-year coach. "I've seen some congratulatory signs around town and received some text messages, but it still hasn't sunk in."
Athletic director John Grogan has a simple reason for the Blue Devils' across-the-board success.
"It takes a community to build great programs, and that's what we have here," said Grogan, now in his 10th year as AD. "We have student-athletes who have a great work ethic and coaches who work really hard. We have a lot of [supportive] parents. I expect our success to continue."
Girls' basketball coach Dori Oldaker said much of the school's success in all of its sports can be credited to the Class of 2010.
"They really had their priorities straight and were a well-functioning group of kids," said the seventh-year coach who previously coached at Blackhawk in Beaver County. "We have coaching staffs who are committed to their programs."
Oldaker's team loses nine seniors, including three starters. Guard Chelsea Apke will play at Presbyterian University of the Big South Conference, and guard Jess Babe and forward Lauren Arbogast will compete for Central Connecticut State of the Northeast Conference.
One family, the Apkes, experienced the joy of two PIAA titles in two sports.
Chelsea Apke earned her title in March in girls' basketball. Younger sister Tess, a junior shortstop, accounted for her team's only run in the PIAA softball final when she slugged a first-inning home run.
Like her coach, Tess Apke's mind can't yet grasp the team's PIAA title.
"I think down the road it will mean more," she said. "My home run only gave us a 1-0 lead. If they got any base runners, they could score."
Five starters return from that team: third baseman Kathleen Mathison, catcher Jen Bahm, center fielder Ashley Darabant, second baseman Kaitlin Klinchock and Apke.
Chelsea Apke couldn't attend the game because she was working.
"My mom, dad and friends were texting me," she said. "When my parents told me Tess hit a home run in the first inning, I was surprised. I was real happy for her."
Badolato, who will join Robert Morris University's softball team, said she did not really think about the perfect game -- her first -- until Mathison told her moments after she had recorded her 11th strikeout to complete the masterpiece.
"I'm always focusing on the next out," she said.
Boys' basketball coach Joe David said success has been contagious in all the school's sports.
"Boys' and girls' teams have been winning state championships, and that's made it a tangible goal for all of our teams," said David, who must replace 6-foot-8 bookends Grant Latuf and Deion Turman along with 6-3 guard Evan Pierce. "A lot of that is due to high expectations, and that goes along with hard work and discipline. Our kids are proud to have the name Mt. Lebanon across their chests."
