Budget holds the line on Duquesne taxes
Wednesday, June 23, 2010

The state board of control overseeing the Duquesne City School District approved a $15.45 million 2010-11 budget that holds taxes at 21.1 mills, marking the 11th consecutive year the board has held the line on taxes.

The budget is about $1 million less than the 2009-10 budget, which included one-time federal stimulus money, said Sarah McCluan, a spokeswoman for the Allegheny Intermediate Unit, which manages the Duquesne district.

The budget for the district includes funds to continue all of the extra-curricular activities the board added for students in grades K-8 recent years, including girls volleyball, boys football, girls and boys basketball, student council, band, chorus and yearbook, Mrs. McCluan said.

One area the board eliminated was the consumer science program it added to the curriculum two years ago. The program was ended, and the part-time teacher was furloughed Tuesday night, so that more resources could be focused on reading and other academic subjects, Mrs. McCluan said.

In other business at Tuesday night's meeting, the board accepted, with regret, the resignation of Cheryl Fogarty as the superintendent of record for the district. Dr. Fogarty, the director of educational services at the AIU, was appointed superintendent of record in May 2009.

But she is leaving the AIU to become director of The Day School at the Children's Institute of Pittsburgh. AIU Executive Director Linda Hippert will serve as Duquesne's superintendent of record until a new one can be named.
