Pants go shorter in the office
Tuesday, June 08, 2010

From New York to Milan, designers showcased shorts of every shape in their spring/summer 2010 collections. They also showed shorts for every occasion, from formal to casual to business attire.

Given the warm weather and new shorts trend, the question will arise: Are they appropriate for the office? Some fashion experts and trend analysts say yes, as long as they're the right length and fit, while others gave a resolute and unwavering no.

"I personally don't feel they have a place in the office," said Carol Kinkela, owner of Carabella boutique in Oakmont. "How one interprets dress-down Fridays has gotten lax and it's my understanding that many companies don't even permit capri pants."

Susan Cernak, senior online fashion and beauty editor for Glamour magazine, welcomes this new trend but advises women to wear them with caution.

"We spend most of our hours at work so it's tempting to take fashion trends we see on the runway into the office, but you have to be really careful about it," Ms. Cernak said. "Stick to classic colors like khaki, blacks, browns and navy. Make sure they're flattering, with a professional-length hemline."

Macy's fashion trend correspondent Laura Schara and trend analyst Tom Julian of the Tom Julian Group agreed.

"The office short is definitely a new trend to try out this summer ... just check your office dress code before you do," Ms. Schara advised. "If you are allowed to wear shorts to the office, they should always come to the knee or just above the knee."

Most women can wear office shorts if they find a flattering style, but short-shorts in the office are, and always will be, a fashion don't. Match a pair of shorts with a crisp white blouse, a light summer sweater or a short-sleeve jacket. They look best with a wedge, a ballet flat or a kitten heel.

"I think a tailored short made with quality fabric is great. I encourage unlined boyfriend blazers, too," said Mr. Julian, a Clairton native who lives in New York.

One of the freshest takes on this trend is the shorts suit, which comprises tailored shorts, a matching blazer and a fitted blouse.

"I love it. I think it's a really nice update to the blazer and skirt look," said Glamour's Ms. Cernak. "The kind of layering is fantastic, and it takes down the stress factor in finding a wrap or sweater to match your base."

Many stores this season are featuring shorts suits, Mr. Julian said. "I'm sure you wouldn't have a problem finding shorts suits at Macy's, Ralph Lauren, J.Crew, Ann Taylor, Anthropologie and even Express."

So, are shorts appropriate for the office? In some places, yes, depending on your office culture, workplace environment and the kind of work you do. But even if your dress code doesn't allow shorts, this summer's styles can be a great alternative to a skirt or dress on a night out on the town.
