Mark Indelicato is best known for his role as Justin Suarez -- the flamboyant, fashion-obsessed nephew of Betty Suarez from the TV series "Ugly Betty."
In terms of fashion, Mark doesn't stray far from his character on the show. His passion for fashion led him to an internship at "Teen Vogue" earlier this year. "Ugly Betty" ended its four-year run April 15. Despite Mark's disappointment, the 15-year-old actor has a lot in store for his future. On Tuesday he takes the Benedum Center stage as the Artful Dodger in Pittsburgh CLO's musical "Oliver!"
The musical, based on Charles Dickens' novel "Oliver Twist," is a touching tale of a young orphan's road to happiness. During the 1960s, the role of the Artful Dodger in "Oliver!" helped launch the careers of notable musicians such as Phil Collins, Davy Jones and Steve Marriott. Next in line is Mark.
Where: Pittsburgh CLO at the Bendum Center.
When: Tuesday through Saturday at 8 p.m.; matiness Thursday at 1 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m.
Tickets: $26.50 to $70.50; 412-456-6666 or www.pgharts.org. Group rates and children's discounts are available for certain shows.
"CLO approached me with this idea for me to play the Artful Dodger in 'Oliver!' and I thought it would be a great opportunity to go back on stage for a short period of time, and I'm really excited," said Mark, a Philadelphia native who hopes to explore Pittsburgh a bit while he's in town.
Mark first became interested in acting when he was 6 years old and started his career when he was 8 at the Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia. His performances in the stage productions "La Vie En Bleu" and "A Christmas Carol" garnered him a role in the theater's staged reading of "Fame Forever," which was presented in New York City after its Philadelphia opening. He attends New York's Professional Performing Arts School in New York City, and although he has done musicals in the past, the transition from television to Broadway has been difficult.
"It's a completely different work ethic. Broadway is lot more work on the actor's part," he said. "When you're doing a TV show, there [is] a lot more behind-the-scenes time, and in Broadway, if you mess up, you can't do it over again....You don't have a lot of room to make mistakes."
Despite his internship and return to the stage, he still misses his fellow cast members from "Ugly Betty."
"I was sad. ... [They were] my best friends for four years and having to say goodbye was definitely hard, but we all are in touch, and America Ferrera and Ana Ortiz [are] coming to see me in 'Oliver!'"
