Individuals, schools vie for Kelly Awards

The Gene Kelly Awards for Excellence in High School Musical Theater will be presented Saturday at the Benedum Center, Downtown.

The 20th annual event will begin at 7:30 p.m.

A panel of 30 judges attended performances of 30 Allegheny County schools and came up with nominees, including six individuals from PG East schools in these categories:

Best Actor: Alex Field of Central Catholic, "The Wiz"; Patrick Bova of Penn Hills, "Thoroughly Modern Millie"; and Donovan Smith of Woodland Hills, "Annie."

Best Actress: Carly Otte of Penn Hills.

Best Supporting Actor: Jonathan Andrew of Plum, "Anything Goes."

Best Supporting Actress: Jaslyn Hodge of Pittsburgh Schenley, "You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown."

Seven East schools were nominated in these categories:

Central Catholic: Costume Design, Lighting Design, Ensemble, Musical for Budget Category II.

McKeesport Area: Costume Design for "Wizard of Oz."

Penn Hills: Costume Design, Choreography, Musical in Budget Category III.

Pittsburgh Schenley: Scenic Design, Costume Design, Lighting Design, All-Student Orchestra, Ensemble, Crew/Technical Execution, Choreography, Direction, Musical in Budget Category I.

Plum: All-Student Orchestra.

Riverview: Ensemble, Choreography, Musical for "Bye Bye Birdie" in Budget Category II.

Woodland Hills: Scenic Design, Lighting Design, Crew/Technical Execution and Direction.

Greensburg Community Days kick off tonight

The city's 16th annual Community Days will begin today and end Sunday evening at Lynch Field Park.

Entertainment, food, craft booths and rides will be offered. Hours are 6 to 10 p.m. today and Friday; noon to 11 p.m. Saturday; and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The cast of Beatlemania will perform from 7:15 to 10 p.m. Friday. Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers will be on stage from 8 to 9:30 Saturday, break for a Zambelli fireworks display from 9:30 to 10, then perform again until 10:45.

Greensburg Idol, a singing competition, will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

All-day riding passes cost $10 tonight, Friday and Sunday and $12 on Saturday.

Parking is not available at Lynch Field. Shuttle buses will run every 15 to 20 minutes.

Saint Vincent Summer Theatre opens

Saint Vincent Summer Theatre will kick off its 42nd season at 8:10 tonight with a preview performance of "Forever Plaid," a musical comedy set in the 1950s. Performances will be held at 8:10 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Tuesday through June 5, June 8-12 and June 15-19. Matinees will be at 2:10 p.m. Wednesday and June 6 and 9.

All performances are in the Performing Arts Center in the Robert S. Carey Student Center, Unity.

Saint Vincent golf outing June 4

Saint Vincent College Alumni and Friends annual golf outing will be held June 4 at the Latrobe Elks and Champion Lakes golf clubs.

Registration will begin at 10 a.m. at both sites, with play beginning at 11 at Champion Lakes and 11:30 at Latrobe Elks. Dinner begins at 5 p.m. in the Community Center Dining Room on campus.

The cost is $90 and registration is on a first-come, first-served basis. Tees and greens may be sponsored for $100 each. Proceeds go to the Saint Vincent College General Scholarship Fund. Contact alumni director Mike Gerdich at 724-805-2568 or mike.gerdich@email.stvincent.edu.

McKeesport Library to close over weekend

In observance of Memorial Day, the Carnegie Library of McKeesport will close at 6 p.m. Friday and reopen at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Information: 412-672-0625.

Author to read stories of success in Shadyside

Julie Postance, author of "Breaking the Sound Barriers: 9 Deaf Success Stories," will speak from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at DePaul School for Hearing and Speech, 6202 Alder St., Shadyside.

She will be joined by a panel of former DePaul students who are deaf or hearing-impaired, plus members of their families, who will share success stories.
