Beds donated to students at city school
Tuesday, May 25, 2010

Thirty families whose children attend the primary building of Pittsburgh Schaeffer K-8 in Crafton Heights today received something many people take for granted: beds.

Educators at Pittsburgh Schaeffer learned that one reason children were falling asleep in school was they didn't have a bed to sleep on. Some slept on the floor, and others shared a bed with several people. About 85 percent of the students in the primary building are eligible for free- or reduced-price lunches.

This morning, 40 donated beds -- enough so that siblings were included -- were delivered to homes in the Sheraden and Crafton Heights area along with sheets and comforters and a stuffed animal, book, toothbrush and toothpaste for each. The beds were donated by CentiMark, a commercial roofer based in Canonsburg, and Pitt Ohio Express donated their delivery. Operation Backpack donated the stuffed animals, books, toothbrushes and toothpaste.

The school and the roofing company were brought together by Storehouse for Teachers, which is starting a local pilot program for providing school supplies in low-income neighborhoods.
