Tuned In: CW's 'Smallville' set to end; 2 new series added for fall
Friday, May 21, 2010

The big news from The CW's fall schedule announcement: TV's Superman will call it a day at the end of the upcoming 10th season as "Smallville" ends its run (about five seasons too late, if you ask me).

Midseason drama "Life Unexpected" was renewed and will pair with the much trashier "One Tree Hill" on Tuesdays. Two new series join the schedule, and "Supernatural" shifts to Friday behind "Smallville."

As expected, The CW ended its lease on a new "Melrose Place" and also canceled low-rated reality shows "High Society" and "Fly Girls."

Here's The CW's fall schedule, with new series in bold:

MONDAY

8 p.m.: "90210."

9 p.m.: "Gossip Girl."

TUESDAY

8 p.m.: "One Tree Hill."

9 p.m.: "Life Unexpected."

WEDNESDAY

8 p.m.: "America's Next Top Model."

9 p.m.: "Hellcats": Pre-law student Marti Perkins (Aly Michalka) loses her scholarship and can stay in school only by joining the Lancer University cheerleading squad (not sure how one relates to the other, oh well!). Ashley Tisdale ("High School Musical") plays a peppy Texan who is Marti's roommate. Matt Barr ("Harper's Island") and Gail O'Grady ("American Dreams") also star.

THURSDAY

8 p.m.: "The Vampire Diaries."

9 p.m.: "Nikita": A new take on "La Femme Nikita," which began as a movie and was also a cable series. Maggie Q stars as the title character, who comes out of hiding after she was trained to be a spy/assassin and then betrayed by Division. Alex (Lyndsy Fonseca) is a new recruit. The series also stars Ashton Holmes ("The Pacific"), Melinda Clarke ("The O.C.") and Xander Berkeley ("24").

FRIDAY

8 p.m.: "Smallville."

9 p.m.: "Supernatural."

Summer

The CW announced no new midseason series -- execs will likely make a few pickups later -- but did announce a summer reality show:

"Plain Jane": Plain women receive a makeover that includes a new wardrobe and "confidence-building exercises." Then the woman surprises her "unsuspecting crush with the new look and reveals her true feelings to him," which ought to put those confidence-building exercises to the test.

'Three Rivers' returns

CBS is expected to air episodes of canceled Pittsburgh-set medical drama "Three Rivers" on Saturdays beginning June 5 and running through July 3. These may be episodes that were produced but have not aired.

A union for WTAE?

In 1997, WTAE on-air talent voted to decertify AFTRA as the union for on-air talent. Now the station's reporters, anchors and others have apparently had a change of heart. On Wednesday the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, Pittsburgh local, petitioned the National Labor Relations Board to represent the station's 25 on-air employees in collective bargaining.

AFTRA represents on-air talent at KDKA and WPXI.

To file this petition, AFTRA needed the support of at least 30 percent of those who would be covered by the union. John Haer, executive director of AFTRA Pittsburgh, said authorization cards were signed by "an overwhelming majority."

"We were contacted by employees at the station who have expressed the need to have a voice in operations that are changing in the industry," Mr. Haer said. He said management is often an impetus for unionizing, too. "I'd say over the last year there have been a multiplicity of factors, a growing realization there that it really is necessary to have an organized voice."

Rick Henry has been general manager at WTAE since 2002; Alex Bongiorno joined the station as news director in March 2009.

Mr. Henry said he was unaware of the filing and had not yet received a copy of the petition.

The next step in the process will be for employees to vote on whether to accept union representation. Mr. Haer said that is expected to happen in the next six weeks.

Soap stars coming to town

A "Soapstar Spectacular," featuring cast members from CBS's daytime dramas, will be held at the Petersen Events Center, 2:30-5:30 p.m. June 13. Tickets cost $35 and include a Q&A session with the stars.

Actors expected to attend include cast members from "The Young and the Restless," "The Bold and the Beautiful," the soon-to-end "As the World Turns" and the already-departed "Guiding Light": Christian LeBlanc, Brandon Beemer, Robert Newman, Kim Zimmer, Michelle Stafford, Don Diamont, Daniel Goddard, Heather Tom, Doug Davidson, Connellsville native Justin Deas and Carnegie Mellon University graduate Van Hansis.
