The Penguins have re-signed rugged defenseman Deryk Engelland.
Engelland, who would have been an unrestriced free agent July 1, accepted a one-year deal that will pay him $500,000 if he is in the NHL and a reduced salary if he is in the minors.
Engelland, 28, had two assists and 17 penalty minutes in nine games with the Penguins during the 2009-10 season.
He is 6 feet 2, 202 pounds and plays a physical game. He had five goals, six assists and 121 penalty minutes in 71 games with the Penguins' American Hockey League affiliate in Wilkes-Barre.
