Home sweet home: Things to do locally this summer

There are plenty of summer staycation opportunities to add to the calendar this year.

The gargoyles are taking over Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Gardens, with fanciful gargoyle sculptures throughout the flower displays.

The Zeiss projector enchanted generations of kids on field trips to the original Buhl Planetarium. The Zeiss is moving to its new home at the Carnegie Science Center, where visitors can learn about the history of this planetarium projection technology.

Baseball fans can relive the glory days of the Pittsburgh Pirates' 1960 World Series victory 50 years ago with "Beat 'Em Bucs," an exhibit at the Senator John Heinz History Center's Western Pennsylvania Sports Museum.

The star of the PBS kids series "Curious George" spends the summer at the Children's Museum of Pittsburgh with a traveling exhibit designed to spark kids' interest and curiosity.
