Jake McAndrew

Seneca Valley

The past week: McAndrew had three goals and an assist for the Seneca Valley lacrosse team Friday against Butler. On Sunday, he scored the winning goal in a 7-6 victory against Carmel, Ind.

Check this out: McAndrew, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound senior, is considered one of the best players in Western Pennsylvania and has helped Seneca Valley to a 16-0 record. He leads the team in points with 33 goals and 23 assists. He will play next season at Mercyhurst University.

? Did you guys expect to be this good this season? I think a lot of people thought we'd be in a rebuilding year. But we actually have 14 seniors, and throughout our careers we've actually played really well and done well.

? Tell me three things needed to be a good lacrosse player? Attitude, work ethic and ...

? Nothing physical? Size and speed definitely help.

? Do you find most football players don't play lacrosse? In the Pittsburgh area, there aren't a lot of football players in lacrosse. But in other states, it's the other way. A lot of lacrosse players are playing football.

? Do you think people realize how rough lacrosse is? Around here? No. A lot of people see us as not as physical as football. But a lot of kids in school are starting to come see us play and a lot of the kids are surprised at actually how physical the game is.

? Should the boy pay for the entire prom or split the cost with his date? I feel the guy should pay for the entire thing. A lot of my friends don't think the same way I do.

? People might be surprised to know that ... I love to play instruments. I play the guitar, but I used to play the piano and saxophone for a while, too.

Iman Wilkerson

Penn Hills

The past week: Wilkerson was the MVP of the Baldwin Track and Field Invitational Friday. She finished first in the 100-meter dash, second in the 200 and ran a leg on two first-place relay teams.

Check this out: Wilkerson, a junior, is next in a long line of top sprinters at Penn Hills. She has the top 200 time (24.33 seconds) in WPIAL Class AAA this season and the third-best 100 (12.33). She is a member of the 400 and 1,600 relay teams that also have the best times.

? What is your best event? My best would be the 200.

? Why does Penn Hills always seem to have good female sprinters and good relay teams? That's a good question and I've thought about that myself. I really have no idea. I guess we just have running talent in this area.

? Have you ever tried any other sports? In sixth grade, I tried basketball. But that just made me realize how much I love track. I wasn't as good as I thought I'd be in basketball.

? What couldn't you do? Offensively, I couldn't handle the ball and my shooting skills weren't good, either. I was fast, though [laugh]. That was a good thing.

? Should the boy pay for the entire prom or split the cost with his date? Personally, I think half and half is only fair.

? Favorite place to eat? Rey Azteca's restaurant here in Penn Hills. It's Mexican food. I love Mexican food.

? People might be surprised to know that ... [I] walk around the house a lot with holes in my socks.
