Brandon Schultz

Monaca

The past week: Schultz had a home run Friday against Quigley and another Monday against Neshannock.

Check this out: Schultz has been on a torrid hitting pace, smacking five home runs in the past five games. In seven games this season, he is batting .722 with 3 doubles, 5 home runs and 16 RBIs. His slugging percentage is a surreal 1.888. Schultz, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior second baseman, is a four-year starter who never hit more than four home runs in a season.

• Can you explain all these home runs? I don't know. I'm just hot, I guess. I'm seeing the ball really well.

• Are you trying to hit with more power? It's just happening. I'm just trying to make contact. I'm not trying to hit home runs.

• Can you keep this going? I'm going to try. If I keep practicing and getting batting practice, we'll see.

• Your nickname is Beans. Where did that come from? I have no idea. My mom gave it to me when I was little and it just stuck with me. Everyone calls me it.

• What do the Pirates need? More players like Garrett Jones.

• What should the Steelers do with Ben Roethlisberger? I'd get rid of him. I don't like that dude. He's a good player, though, so I guess it matters what you do on the field.

• People might be surprised to know that ... I love to archery hunt.

Ellie Hanlon

Peters Township

The past week: Hanlon scored 20 goals in five games for the Peters Township girls' lacrosse team, and the Indians won four of the games.

Check this out: Hanlon, a 5-9 senior, is the leading scorer for a Peters Township team that is the three-time defending WPIAL champion. She has been on the varsity since her freshman year and also was a two-year starter on Peters Township's basketball team. Hanlon will attend the University of Florida and hopes to make the Gators' lacrosse team as a walk-on.

• Even though you also scored a lot last year, is your role any different this year? I have to take it up a notch. I'm a captain and we have a lot of younger girls this year, some freshmen playing varsity. I need to inspire them to get going.

• Are there many basketball players who play lacrosse? I'm the only one at our school. Overall, girls I talk to who play lacrosse in college, a lot of them say they gave up basketball at some point.

• Are there any carryovers from basketball to lacrosse? Defense is a major thing. It's about staying right in front of your girl in lacrosse. There are picks in lacrosse, too, that are similar to basketball.

• What if checking were allowed in girls' lacrosse? You can check someone's stick, but not their body, which bothers me a lot. I'm a fan of checking. I would definitely like it. I've always been a physical player. I guess maybe because I grew up with three brothers.

• Three things always in your refrigerator? Frozen pancakes for the morning, a lot of fruit and yogurt.

• What should the Steelers do with Ben Roethlisberger? I think they should give him another chance and keep him around.

• People might be surprised to know that ... [I] only started playing lacrosse my freshman year.
