Mount Alvernia High School

Mount Alvernia High School alumnae will gather for a liturgy in the school chapel at 11 a.m. April 18. After the service, there will be an opportunity for visitors to meet with former classmates and current students and faculty. North Allegheny

The 10th annual Pump House Run, sponsored by the district physical education department and open to all family members, will be held April 17 at the North Allegheny Intermediate High School Athletic Field, 350 Cumberland Road.

Proceeds from the event fund new and innovative fitness programs for students, according to Dave Schimdt, chairman of the physical education department. Every year, one grade level in the district benefits from proceeds.

• The school district student assistance program is sponsoring a Community Connections Seminar, "Before They Know It All: Talking to Tweens & Teens about Sexuality," from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Marshall Middle School. The free program is for parents and for students in grades 6--10, but is also intended for teachers and others who have contact with students.

ACT 48 credit will be provided for educational professionals who attend. For more information, call the Student Assistance Office at 724-934-7260.

The school is at 5145 Wexford Run Road, Marshall.

• The North Allegheny Indoor Drum Line won the gold medal at the Three Rivers Winter Ensemble Association 2010 Championship. In addition to winning the gold medal, the Drum Line also won an award for being the unit that most exemplifies the spirit of the association and the award for the highest overall performance analysis score.

The organization comprises both scholastic and independent units in color guard, dance teams, majorette twirlers, mixed ensembles, and percussion units.

Seneca Valley

Evans City Middle School has been awarded a Highmark Healthy High 5 School Challenge grant of $9,830 to implement Evans City Skate Pass and Cardio Kick Program to provide students with enhanced physical activity.

Evans City Skate Pass will use skateboards in physical education classes. The goal is to increase activity among fifth- and sixth-graders.

The cardio kick program will use large scooters and Airdyne exercise bikes to enhance the fitness portion of physical education class. The first year of the grant will focus on the fifth and sixth grades, introducing both programs to first through fourth grades the following year.

Quaker Valley

Apple Corp. has named Quaker Valley High School an Apple Distinguished School. It is one of four schools in Pennsylvania to receive this distinction.

Brent Fry, representing Apple, presented Superintendent Joseph Clapper with a framed citation at the March 23 meeting of the Quaker Valley school board.

In addition, the company has invited Dr. Clapper to represent the district on a superintendents' panel at the Apple Education Leadership Summit 2010 to be held in Dallas April 21.

Pine-Richland

Cello Fury and Pine-Richland strings students will perform in concert at 7 p.m. April 21, 700 Warrendale Road.

Cello Fury began as a cover band of four cellists in 2004, known as Cellofourte. Now, three of its former band members present audiences with their own unique style of cello rock.

The free program is sponsored by the Pine-Richland Orchestra Association & the Pine-Richland Opportunities Fund.

There will be a basket raffle in the auditorium before the program.
