BRADENTON, Fla. -- Brandon Moss, batting .081 this spring and having fallen behind Rule V draftee John Raynor in the competition for an outfield/bench role, this afternoon was designated for assignment to make room for right-handed pitcher Hayden Penn, who was claimed off waivers from Florida.
The Pirates have 10 days upon designating a player to release, trade or waive him.
Moss, a Red Sox prospect acquired in the Jason Bay deal in July 2008, could conceivably wind up in the Pirates' minor-league system if no other team claims him or trades for him. Moss, 26, batted .232 in 178 Pirates games with 13 home runs and 64 RBI.
In 2009, Penn shuttled between Florida and Class AAA New Orleans after being acquired from Baltimore on April Fool's Day in exchange for infielder Robert Andino. Penn, 25, opened the 2009 season on Florida's roster and was 1-0 in 16 Marlins games. He was 2-4 in 14 games -- 13 of them starts -- with New Orleans.
