Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic: New York beats WPIAL, 26-21
Sunday, March 21, 2010

The New York All-Stars pulled out a 26-21 victory against the WPIAL All-Stars in the preliminary match of the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic Saturday night at Pitt's Fitzgerald Field House.

A former Pennsylvania wrestler was the difference maker for the winners. Lance Moore, a New York champion from Johnson City, capped the team victory with a convincing, 13-3, major decision against Bethel Park's Adam Lazenga in the 285-pound match. Lazenga finished third at the PIAA championships last week.

"It was a little weird wrestling against a Pennsylvania kid again," said Moore, who was a two-time PIAA Class AA place-winner at Lackawanna Trail High School before moving to New York. "I may live in New York now, but I still consider myself a Pa. kid. It makes me wonder what I could have done in the PIAA tournament this year if I would have stayed."

WPIAL wrestlers had seven victories in the 13-bout match, but came up short.

Penn-Trafford's Ryan Bohince opened the match with a 9-7 come-from-behind decision in the 112-pound bout. Bohince was a PIAA place-winner in 2008, but didn't place the last two seasons.

"It was great to end my career on a winning note," Bohince said.

Shady Side Academy's Frank Martellotti, a four-time PIAA Class AA place-winner and two-time finalist, recorded a 10-3 win at 130 against Taylor Laraia of Newburgh Free Academy.

Canon-McMillan's Sam Lombardo and North Allegheny's Andy Candiello had consecutive victories at 140 and 145. Lombardo scored a takedown and back points with 29 second left to pull out a 10-8 decision and Candiello was named the WPIAL's Outstanding Wrestler for his 4-3 decision in double overtime against Andy Rodriguez, a two-time New York champion. Candiello escaped 11 seconds into the second overtime period.

West Allegheny's Troy Reaghard at 160, Chartiers Valley's Tyler Wilps at 171 and Latrobe's Eric Shaffer at 189 also came up with wins for the WPIAL All-Stars.

Cody Ruggirello, a New York champion from Valley Central, was named Outstanding Wrestler for his team after pinning West Greene's Colton Blumer at 135.
