Mt. Lebanon coach Dori Oldaker compared her team's recent dominance of Baldwin to a coin toss, saying that it's only matter of time before the Highlanders come out on the winning side.
"It's like flipping a coin 20 times," Oldaker said. "Sooner or later it will come up heads."
For the Blue Devils, though, tails still rules.
Mt. Lebanon defeated Section 4 rival Baldwin for the eighth consecutive time in two seasons Friday, using a strong second half to defeat the Highlanders, 56-42, in a PIAA Class AAAA quarterfinal at Chartiers Valley.
The win lifts the WPIAL champion Blue Devils (27-2) to the semifinals for the third season in a row. The defending champions have played in the final the past two seasons and next will meet District 3 winner Central Dauphin (26-6).
Against Baldwin (22-6), the Blue Devils led by just one at halftime and trailed, 24-23, early in the third quarter before going on an 8-0 run to take the lead for good. Offensive rebounding fueled the spurt, as the Blue Devils scored three baskets on putbacks.
"We talk to the kids about never giving up on a play," Oldaker said.
Junior Madison Cable, who had two of those baskets, scored all of her 15 points in the second half.
"In the second half, we tried to run some plays to get her the ball and get her open," Oldaker said.
Mt. Lebanon sealed the win by making 10 of 12 free throws in the final 1:37.
Lauren Arbogast led the Blue Devils with 16 points and Jess Babe added 11.
Belma Nurkic kept the Highlanders in the game by scoring 26 points, including 15 in the second half.
Avonworth 40, South Fayette 35: The Antelopes (25-2) earned their first trip to the semifinals since 1992 with the triumph against the Lions (19-8) at North Allegheny. Lauren Mayernik led Avonworth with 16 points. Lizzie King paced South Fayette with 10. Avonworth owned a 12-point lead midway through the third quarter before the Lions mounted a comeback. The Lions tied the score, 32-32, but the Antelopes scored the next five points to gain a 37-32 advantage with 2:20 left. After South Fayette pulled to within 37-35, King stole a pass and was fouled with 18 seconds left, but she missed the front end of a one-and-one. Avonworth's Tara Gallupe made a free throw with eight seconds left and teammate Natalie Zivic scored with six seconds left to provide the final points.
Villa Maria 51, Seton-LaSalle 38: The Rebels (22-7) saw their season end with the loss to defending PIAA champion Villa Maria (26-2) at Kennedy Catholic. The District 10 champions outscored the Rebels, 20-13, in the second quarter to take an eight-point halftime lead. Villa Maria guard Kayla McBride, a Notre Dame recruit, led the Victors with 22 points. She scored 14 points in the first half, with 10 of those coming in the second quarter. Niagara recruit Katie Gattuso and Jordan Dwyer each scored 10 points for the Rebels.
