The past week: Gattuso had 19 points and 17 rebounds in a PIAA Class AA second-round playoff victory against Marion Center Tuesday, and 16 points in a first-round win against North East last Friday.
Check this out: Gattuso, a 6-foot-2 senior center, averages a double-double in points and rebounds. She averages 14 points a game. Gattuso has signed with Niagara, a Division I school. Her father is Pitt assistant football coach Greg Gattuso.
You seem to be at your best the last half of the season. Why? I got off to a slow start because I was sick at the beginning of the season.
You were very upset after losing in the WPIAL final. What bothered you most? Just losing in consecutive years. I never thought we were going to lose. Honestly, at no point did I think we would lose -- and then we did. It hit me so hard.
Should I ask a question about your dad, or do you get tired of being asked about him? No, go ahead.
OK, do you know how bad he used to complain to the officials when he played basketball? Oh yeah. I inherited that gene. It runs strong in me. I always just say, "Sorry, I got it from my dad."
People might be surprised to know? My teammates and I have slowly gathered a collection of these little stuffed animals and we've given them all names. We take them everywhere. They're our mascots.
Last week: A freshman, Wiercioch won a PIAA Class AA championship at 152 pounds.
Check this out: Wiercioch (pronounced "WEER-chock") became the first wrestler in Charleroi history to win a PIAA title and the first freshman in the state to win a PIAA title at a weight class heavier than 130 pounds.
Did you have any expectations at all coming into this year? My goal was to win states, but I really had no idea I'd actually pull it off.
What in the world do you do for an encore? A lot of people ask me if I can win four, but I'll just take it one year at a time and one match at a time.
You ever play football? I played a couple years in the youth program. I was alright. But I started wrestling and just stuck with wrestling.
What's the worst thing about wrestling? I'd probably say losing weight. It's not bad with me, but I see some kids having to cut 10 pounds for weigh-ins.
You could have a wrestling scholarship to any college in the country, where would you pick? Probably Stanford or Penn State.
People might be surprised to know that you ... ? I taught myself how to do gymnastics. One day I just did a flip.
