UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. -- One of the most maligned quarterbacks in Penn State history returned to campus Wednesday to audition for a job.
Anthony Morelli was among 22 former players showcasing their skills on Pro Day for NFL scouts and assistant coaches representing all 32 teams.
Morelli, a former Penn Hills standout who has been out of the NFL since being cut in training camp by the Arizona Cardinals two years ago, is hoping to earn another shot.
"I'm only 24 years old," Morelli said. "I'm young. I still have a lot left in the tank. I just really love the game. There's no quit in me. I'm just going to keep going until I exhaust all options."
Morelli has bounced from job to job since playing his final game for Penn State in the 2007 Alamo Bowl.
He signed with the Cardinals as a free agent after the '08 NFL draft and played in all four preseason games before being released.
A possible opportunity with the San Jose SaberCats fell through last fall when the Arena Football League team folded prior to the start of the season.
Morelli, 6 foot 3 1/2 and 235 pounds, had workouts with the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers in '09. He also coached the quarterbacks at Plum and helped his uncle with construction jobs.
"Coaching the quarterbacks at Plum was great, but it's not the same as playing," he said. "I just had that itch. I knew I still had it. I was working out with those quarterbacks every day, running and throwing."
Morelli's wife, Adrienne, a former Penn State women's basketball player, encouraged her husband to give his football career another shot. Shortly after his high school coaching duties ended in the fall, they and their 14-month-old daughter, Gianna, moved to Adrienne's hometown of Indianapolis.
Morelli has spent the past nine weeks training at St. Vincent Sports Performance and getting guidance from former NFL quarterback Jack Trudeau. Morelli held an individual workout at the facility for eight NFL teams a month ago at the NFL Scouting Combine. He was timed at 4.92 and 4.98 in the 40-yard dash.
He took part in throwing drills Wednesday.
"Any time you can get in front of NFL teams and scouts, it's a good thing," Morelli said. "I'm just going out, doing my best and hoping for the best."
Morelli was a two-year starter at Penn State, finishing his career with 5,275 yards and 31 touchdowns.
"I've matured a lot in the last two years," he said. "I've grown up a lot."
Linebacker Sean Lee from Upper St. Clair said he ran "mid 4.5s to low 4.6s" in the 40 after posting a 4.72 at the combine. He has personal workouts scheduled with the Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts and New York Giants. He also said he would interview with the Steelers.
Linebacker Navorro Bowman, who said he ran a 4.61 in the 40 Wednesday after posting a 4.72 at the combine, has visits set with the Steelers and Cowboys. He signed with agent Drew Rosenhaus.
