Troopers find heroin during traffic stop on Turnpike
Monday, March 08, 2010

A man and woman from Allegheny County were taken into custody over the weekend after state police said troopers caught them transporting $500,000 worth of heroin on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Somerset.

Police said a car driven by Robin Loren Turner, 50, of Stowe, was clocked at 69 mph in a 55 mph zone on the Turnpike heading west late Saturday. A trooper followed the car through the Allegheny Tunnel and then pulled it over. He said Ms. Turner and Mohammed Ali Ghafoori, 56, of Millvale, who was in the passenger seat, appeared nervous. The pair said they were on their way back to Pittsburgh from New Jersey, where they had bought carpet yarn.

After they consented to a search, police said, a dog alerted to heroin and troopers recovered 101 grams worth half a million dollars on the street.
