WPIAL Class AAA wrestling: 112-pound class loaded with talent
Saturday, March 06, 2010

Upper St. Clair's Mackenzie McGuire will have a chance for revenge when he faces Hempfield's Paul Bewak in the 112-pound semifinals of the WPIAL Class AAA tournament today at noon at Canon-McMillan High School.

"I lost, 1-0, to Bewak in the semifinals last year," said McGuire, referring to the 103-pound consolation for third place. "That loss kept me from qualifying for the PIAA tournament."

Bewak went on to place second in the PIAA, while McGuire could only wonder what if. "I'm expecting another close match," McGuire said. "I just hope it goes my way this time. I don't want to experience that feeling of disappointment again."

McGuire (29-0), the No. 2 seed, remained unbeaten with a 4-2 win against Kiski Area's Cole Landowski (31-12) in last night's quarterfinals. Bewak (33-5), the No. 3 seed, earned a return trip to the semifinals with an 8-4 win against Latrobe's Chace Small (28-9).

The 112-pound weight class is considered the strongest of the 14 weight classes. The top seed is Derry's Jimmy Gulibon (30-1), who won WPIAL and PIAA titles at 103 last year. The No. 4 seed is Penn-Trafford's Ryan Bohince (30-7), who placed eighth at 103 in 2008. Gulibon and Bohince were also victorious in the quarterfinals.

"I love it," said McGuire. "Every match is competitive. It's a big challenge, but I'm better prepared for it."

Two other unbeaten wrestlers were not as fortunate, as Bethel Park's Dylan Mogan and Ringgold's Fred Garcia suffered their first defeat. Mogan (19-1), the top seed at 125, dropped a 3-2 decision to Hempfield's Garrett Swarm (29-8), the No. 8 seed.

Garcia (34-1), the top seed at 189, defaulted 1:20 into his bout with Hampton's Jacob Hart (25-7), the No. 9 seed, after suffering a sprained ankle.

The WPIAL's other three unbeaten entries posted wins. Franklin Regional's Nico Megaludis, the top seed at 119, upped his record to 30-0 with a 22-6 victory against Knoch's Grayson Hixon.

Butler's Cole Baxter and Chartiers Valley's Tyler Wilps, the top two seeds at 171, both improved to 35-0 with third-period falls.

Central Catholic will be well represented in the semifinals, as five Vikings wrestlers posted quarterfinal victories.

Canon-McMillan, Latrobe, and Connellsville each had four wrestlers advance to the semifinals.
