NHL Notebook: Flyers lose Emery; trade for goalie likely
Wednesday, March 03, 2010

Philadelphia Flyers goalie Ray Emery needs surgery to repair his right hip and will miss the rest of the season.

Emery went 16-11-1 with a 2.64 goals-against average and .905 save percentage in his first season with the Flyers. He had three shutouts.

The deadline

The NHL trade deadline is 3 p.m. today. Keep updated on the latest Penguins moves -- if any -- throughout the day at www.post-gazette.com.

Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said Tuesday that Emery's surgery has not been scheduled.

Michael Leighton has started in Emery's place and, for now, remains Philadelphia's No. 1 goalie, but that could change today before the NHL trade deadline passes with Nashville and St. Louis and Florida shaping up as the most likely partners

Thrashers

Atlanta has signed defenseman Chris Chelios, 48. Chelios is a three-time Norris Trophy winner as the NHL's top defenseman. He has spent the season with the AHL Chicago Wolves and is expected to remain with the Wolves for now.

Chelios was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens in 1981. He has played in 11 NHL All-Star Games and has 185 goals and 763 assists in 1,644 NHL games.

Senators

Ottawa has acquired veteran defenseman Andy Sutton from the New York Islanders in exchange for a second-round pick in the 2010 NHL draft.

Sutton, 34, has 34 goals and 101 assists in 567 games with San Jose, Minnesota, Atlanta and the Islanders. The 6-foot-6 defenseman has 984 career penalty minutes, including 73 this season while posting four goals and eight assists in 54 games with New York.

His 153 blocked shots this season are second overall in the league.

Wild

Minnesota signed defensemen Marek Zidlicky and Clayton Stoner to contract extensions. Both Zidlicky, 33, and Stoner, 25, were to be restricted free agents this summer. Zidlicky signed a three-year extension and Stoner for two. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Zidlicky has 36 points in 60 games. Stoner is on the injured-reserve list after hernia surgery.

Blackhawks

Chicago acquired defenseman Nick Boynton from Anaheim for future considerations. The move adds depth to the Blackhawks' defense, even though the team assigned Boynton to their AHL affiliate in Rockford, Ill.
