Friday, February 26, 2010

Logan Stieber was thrilled to hear he had been chosen to wrestle in the Dapper Dan Wrestling Classic. He was even happier to find that three of his friends would be joining him on the United States All-Star Team.

"I've never been to the Classic before, but I've heard a lot of good things about it," said Stieber, a three-time Ohio state champion from Monroeville High School in Norwalk.

He will be joined by three fellow Ohioans in the March 20 Classic at the Fitzgerald Field House: Ty Minch, Jamie Clark, and Nick Sulzer. The United States All-Stars will face the Pennsylvania All-Stars in the feature match at 8 p.m. The WPIAL All-Stars will face a New York All-Star Team in the preliminary match at 6 p.m.

Stieber has compiled a 173-1 career record in four seasons.

"I currently own the Ohio state record for the most consecutive wins," said Stieber, who has recorded 169 consecutive wins since his only loss as a freshman. "My only loss came in the finals of my first high school tournament."

The 125-pound Stieber has also won four national titles at the USA Wrestling National Championships in at Fargo, N.D.

He will continue his athletic and academic career at Ohio State University on a wrestling scholarship.

Stieber lives in the small town of Norwalk, which is 20 minutes from Cedar Point.

"We're right between Cleveland and Toledo," he said. "We're only two hours away from Ohio State, so it will be easy for my family to follow my college career. I couldn't ask for anything better."

Minch is a two-time Ohio champion from Aurora High School. Minch, a 119-pound senior and Virginia Tech recruit, was a Junior National freestyle champion at Fargo in 2009 and a Fila Cadet National runner-up in 2008.

Clark is a three-time Ohio finalist and two-time champion from St. Edward High School in Lakewood, outside Cleveland. Clark, an Illinois recruit currently competing at 130, has won four national titles, the last coming in 2007.

Sulzer is a three-time Ohio place-winner and two-time runner-up from St. Edward. Sultzer, a 160-pound senior and Virginia recruit, was a Junior National champion in 2009.
