The only thing messier than the section title races is an average Pittsburgh road four days after a snowfall.
Though teams have played for weeks, many section titles are undecided with just a few games to play.
Here is a look at all the championship races involving teams from the Post-Gazette's East coverage area:
Class AAAA, Section 1 -- Four teams still have a shot to win this title. Latrobe has a one-game lead over second-place Hempfield, but Norwin and Kiski Area are just two games back in the loss column. And Latrobe has three more games to play.
Class AAAA, Section 2 -- Gateway has a one-game lead over Plum and McKeesport, but the Gators have to play the Mustangs and the Tigers once more before the end of the season. Gateway lost to Plum at home and beat McKeesport on the road earlier this season.
Class AAAA, Section 3 -- Central Catholic is one game ahead of second-place North Allegheny in the loss column, and the Vikings are two games ahead of Butler. But Central Catholic has to play both teams again before the end of the season. The Vikings previously beat the Tigers but lost to the Golden Tornado.
Class AAA, Section 3 -- Greensburg Salem and Laurel Highlands are tied in the loss column at one loss apiece. Whichever team wins the upcoming game between the two will likely emerge as section champion. Laurel Highlands beat Greensburg Salem, 67-62, at home in January.
Class AA, Section 1 -- Freeport leads Burrell by two games in the loss column and has already beaten the Buccaneers twice this season. The Yellowjackets have two games left to play and have earned at least a share of the section title.
Class AA, Section 4 -- Shady Side Academy has a one-game lead over Greensburg Central Catholic. The Indians beat the Centurions, 63-55, on the road last month and the two teams have an upcoming rematch. If Shady Side Academy sweeps Greensburg Central Catholic, the Indians will win their first title since the 2005-06 season.
Class AAAA, Section 1 -- Norwin has gained some separation in this race. With two games left to play, the Knights have a two-game lead in the loss column over second-place Kiski Area. One more win gives the Knights a championship.
Class AAAA, Section 2 -- Oakland Catholic and Fox Chapel are tied with one loss each. The Foxes edged Oakland Catholic, 37-36, in January. Whichever team wins the upcoming rematch will likely walk away with an outright section championship.
Class AAA, Section 3 -- With a two-game lead and just one section game remaining, Indiana has wrapped up its second consecutive section title.
Class AA, Section 4 -- Jeannette is almost guaranteed to win at least a share of the section crown. The question is, will it be outright? The Jayhawks are one game ahead of Greensburg Central Catholic, and the two teams have a rematch at the end of the season. Jeannette beat the Centurions, 57-54, at home earlier this season.
For those looking for immediate insight into the WPIAL tournament the Management Science Associates Sports Network is the place to be Wednesday evening.
The WPIAL is supposed to announce the pairings for its annual tournament at 7 that evening and the MSA Sports Network will have the WPIAL Basketball Pairings Show 7-9 p.m. on many of its stations and on the internet at: www.msasportsnetwork.com.
The show, which will also have streaming video, will be hosted by MSA Sports Network director Don Rebel and include a large cast. Those expected to contribute include MSA announcers Johnny Lee, the former Seton-LaSalle, Bishop Canevin and Baldwin head coach, Bob Orkwis, Sam Hall, Steve Nagler, Mark Schaas, Lee Mohn, Jonathan Whaley and Mike Azadian.
They won't all be on the air at the same time, but why so many people to talk about the playoffs?
"We assign two guys to each classification and that way they can do some homework before the pairings come out," Rebel said. "We'll rotate guys in as we go through each class and break it down. It has worked out well in the past."
Not all of the radio stations on the MSA Sports Network will air the pairings show. Here are some of them that will: WMBA-AM (1460) in Ambridge, WBVP-AM (1230) in Beaver Falls, WMBS-AM (590) in Uniontown, WJPA-AM (1450) in Washington, WCNS-AM (1480) in Latrobe and WBUT-AM (1050) in Butler.
The MSA Sports Network will broadcast all of the WPIAL playoff games either on one of its affiliates or on the internet only at the Web site.
