Increasing wind, continuing snow, making travel difficult
Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Roads have been treacherous around the region today after the overnight snowfall, which continued well into the day, but a new ingredient is entering the mix -- the wind.

With the storm system moving to the east, winds have begun to increase. By this afternoon, gusts may reach 20 to 30 mph, causing blowing snow, limited visibility and drifts.

The conditions have already prompted the Pittsburgh schoool district to cancel classes Thursday, the fourth straight day. See information about school closings and delays on KDKA.com, the Post-Gazette's news partner.

The state Department of Transportation also announced this morning that all driver's license and photo centers will be closed today because of the winter storm.

The winter storm warning remains in effect until 7 p.m. for eastern Ohio, northern West Virginia, western Maryland and nearly all of Pennsylvania.

National Weather Service meteorologist Rodney Smith said that, by noon, the area had received 6 inches of snow since the most recent storm started Wednesday afternoon.

Another 1 to 3 inches was expected this afternoon.

Locations to the east, however, likely will receive larger amounts of snow. The weather service has issued a blizzard warning for Westmoreland and Fayette counties, as well as counties in Maryland. Gusts up to 50 mph are forecast. An additional 6 to 12 inches is expected by tonight.

Greensburg City Administrator Susan Trout announced City Hall will close for the remainder of the day due to blizzard warnings. Key personnel will be available to residents at an Emergency Operations Center at the rear of the building until further notice. All calls made to City Hall will be forwarded to the emergency center.
