College Roundup: Rutgers suspends Stringer for a game
Wednesday, February 10, 2010

Rutgers suspended Hall of Fame women's basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer Tuesday for one game for misusing practice players.

Stringer will miss the Scarlet Knights' game against Seton Hall today. She is third among women's coaches on the all-time victories list with 838 wins and was enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame last September.

Stringer violated an NCAA bylaw which states that managers may not participate as practice players with the institution's team if they are not eligible student-athletes.

Associate head coach Carlene Mitchell will be the acting head coach against Seton Hall.

Rutgers only has nine players on its roster after freshman Christine Huber decided to transfer in early January. The Scarlet Knights entered the season without leading scorer Epiphanny Prince, who decided to leave school last spring after her junior year to pursue a playing career overseas. She was the team's leading scorer averaging 19.5 points.

As a result, the Scarlet Knights have struggled this season, going 13-10 including losses in three of their past four games.

District women

• Duquesne 54, Rhode Island 47: Alex Gensler and Keri Pryor combined for 25 points to lead the Dukes to a victory against host Rhode Island (9-15, 2-7 Atlantic 10). Duquesne (18-6, 8-1) improved to 11-2 on the road this season.

Big East men

• Georgetown 79, Providence 70: Chris Wright scored 21 points and Greg Monroe had 12 points and 12 assists to lead No. 7 Georgetown to a victory against host Providence (12-12, 4-8 Big East). Wright scored 16 points in the second half as the Hoyas (18-5, 8-5) erased an eight-point deficit.

Top 25 men

• Illinois 63, Wisconsin 56: Demetri McCamey scored 27 points to lead Illinois to an upset against host No. 11 Wisconsin, snapping the Badgers' 51-0 home record against unranked Big Ten opponents under coach Bo Ryan. The Illini (17-8, 9-3 Big Ten) became the first team to beat Ryan three times at the Kohl Center after wins in 2005 and '06 and ended Wisconsin's (18-6, 8-4) 18-game home winning streak.

• Purdue 76, Michigan St. 64: E'Twaun Moore scored a season-high 25 points lifting No. 6 Purdue (20-3, 8-3 Big 10) to a victory over host No. 10 Michigan State (19-6, 9-3).

• Vanderbilt 90, Tennessee 71: Jeffery Taylor scored 16 of his career-high 26 points in the first half and No. 22 Vanderbilt never trailed in routing visiting No. 12 Tennessee (18-5, 6-3). The Commodores (18-5, 7-2 Southeastern Conference) swept the season series against their instate rival for the first time since 2004-05.

• Kentucky 66, Alabama 55: John Wall had 22 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double, and fellow freshman DeMarcus Cousins got his seventh in a row, as No. 3 Kentucky (23-1, 8-1 SEC) outmuscled visiting Alabama (13-11, 3-7).

Notes

• Oklahoma freshmen Stephen Pledger and Andrew Fitzgerald, who were cited for petty larceny over the weekend, have been suspended from the basketball team.
