Robert Morris opens, then cancels classes
Tuesday, February 09, 2010

Robert Morris University, saying no one from the city asked it to close today, initially opened its Downtown center but later cancelled classes there and on its Moon campus for the rest of today and for tomorrow.

The Moon campus closure was effective at 3 p.m., and the center canceled classes at midday, said Jonathan Potts, a university spokesman.

Other Pittsburgh campuses were closed all day today, some noting the city's request. Joanna Doven late yesterday said the city made the request of major universities through its public safety director, and she mentioned Robert Morris by name.

In explaining his school's initial decision, Mr. Potts said major routes to its main campus and its Downtown facility were passable. However, a student shuttle between those locations took longer than normal this morning.

He said that in light of that and the second forecasted snowstorm in less than a week, the school revisited its earlier decision. Had Robert Morris known about the city's request, said Mr. Potts, "We certainly would have given it serious consideration."

Ms. Doven could not be immediately reached today.
