Woman sentenced in fatal hit-and-run
Tuesday, February 09, 2010

A McKeesport woman was sentenced to three to six years in prison this morning for the hit and run death of a North Side woman.

Catherine Callahan, 66, was stuck and killed on March 8, 2006, while walking in the Strip District. The vehicle that hit her, driven by Casandra Gatewood, kept going, dragging Ms. Callahan for half a block.

Witnesses were able to get Ms. Gatewood's license plate number, and she was found a short time later in the Hill District.

Ms. Gatewood, 46, pleaded guilty in November to homicide by vehicle while DUI and speeding. Allegheny County Judge Randal B. Todd sentenced Ms. Gatewood to prison, followed by five years probation.

Her blood alcohol level following the crash was .198, more than twice the legal limit for driving.
