Things have been busy beyond the normal duties for the Bridgeville Volunteer Fire Department since the weekend snowstorm, an official told borough council Monday night.
The department has helped the public works department clear streets of snow with its plow-equipped-pick-up truck, blocked off streets where there are downed wires and trees, supplied a generator for a family on Hickman Street and picked up a police officer so he could make his scheduled shift.
William Chilleo, chief of the BVFD, told council his department answered 40 calls from Friday night to Monday. Many of the calls, he said, involved working with the police and public works departments to assist them in responding to emergencies caused by the snow.
"We offered the use of our 4-wheel-drive vehicles to the police department to make it easier for the officers to move around town," Mr. Chilleo said.
He added the station house was manned around the clock throughout the weekend starting Friday night, even though a number of volunteers didn't have power at their own homes.
"It just shows the dedication of our members," he said.
