Tuesday, February 09, 2010

Norwin school directors Monday night unanimously named former Penn-Trafford coach Art Tragesser head varsity football coach, weight room and conditioning coordinator. He replaces Dan Conwell, a guidance counselor at the high school, who was not rehired after five seasons.

"Coach Tragesser's success has earned the respect of his peers throughout the state, and his players," said school board president Robert Perkins. "We're fortunate that a coach of his caliber was interested in helping Norwin create a solid, competitive football program."

A North Huntingdon resident for 40 years, Tragesser, 62, compiled a 156-85-3 record in 24 seasons spanning 244 games as a head coach. He was the head coach of the Pennsylvania squad against Ohio in the 2003 Big 33 Football Classic

In 13 seasons at neighboring archrival Penn-Trafford, he compiled an 83-52 record -- including 12 WPIAL playoff appearances and 11 wins in 13 tries against Norwin -- before resigning in 2008.

Elsewhere, New Brighton hired former coach Joe Greco as its head coach. Greco, a middle school teacher in the district, was the Lions head coach from 1995-2006, compiling a 68-52 record. He has been an assistant coach at Westminster College in New Wilmington for the past three seasons.
