People in the News: Letterman thought up Super Bowl ad
Tuesday, February 09, 2010

David Letterman's Super Bowl spot was almost home to all of the most famous names in talk TV -- including Conan O'Brien, Popeater.com reports. According to The Wrap, the much-discussed promo, which featured Letterman, Jay Leno and Oprah, was originally designed to star the ginger giant as well.

"Late Show" executive producer Rob Burnett approached Conan's camp about appearing in the commercial, but his request wasn't met with a response. "It wasn't as if they even said no," Mr. Burnett said. "I just think they weren't in a position to consider it at all."

The concept for the "Late Show" promo was devised by Mr. Letterman himself. Despite the high profile of the celebs in the commercial, information about the spot was kept quiet until Super Bowl Sunday.

Howard Stern said on his satellite radio show Monday that Fox is considering him as a possible replacement for Simon Cowell when "American Idol's" 10th season begins in 2011, EW.com reports.

"There's not a better job on the planet than judging that [expletive] karaoke contest," The Wrap quotes Mr. Stern as saying. He added, "They'd have to pay me a ton of dough because I already make a ton of dough." The shock jock was responding to a New York Post report from Friday suggesting that he is the leading candidate to replace Mr. Cowell on the show's judging panel in 2011. Mr. Stern's $500 million five-year contract with Sirius XM expires at the end of this year. Mr. Cowell announced last month he will not return to Idol next year and will instead bring his "X-Factor" singing competition to Fox's fall 2011 schedule.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are still together -- and they've now taken legal action against the British tabloid that claimed otherwise.

The A-list couple are suing News of the World over its report that the stars were broken up and dividing their fortune.

"The News of the World has failed to meet our clients' reasonable demands for a retraction of and apology for these false and intrusive allegations, which have now been widely republished by mainstream news outlets. We have advised them to bring proceedings, which they have now done," Brangelina's London attorney Keith Schilling says, The Guardian reports.

Several weeks ago, News of the World claimed Mr. Pitt and Ms. Jolie had met with a lawyer in December to discuss the division of their combined millions and custody of their six children -- Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Knox and Vivienne.

"However, in this case we can confirm unequivocally, and upon instructions, that the allegations published by the News of the World are false as well as intrusive," their lawyer adds.

Although the pair hadn't been seen together much in recent months, since the News of the World story broke, they've been spotted at the Director's Guild Awards as well as last weekend's Super Bowl in Miami.

Apparently, "American Chopper" has been, well, chopped.

TMZ reports that TLC has canceled its popular reality series, which followed the comings and goings of the Orange County Choppers' bike shop, and will air its final episode Thursday.

"The Teutuls will always be a part of the Discovery family, and we congratulate them on a tremendously successful series run," a rep for the network said.

The show debuted on the Discovery Channel in 2003, before moving to its sister network at the end of 2007. In six seasons on the air, "Chopper" also launched two video games and a short-lived parody on Comedy Central.

At the center of the show was Paul Teutul Sr. and his two sons, Michael and Paulie Jr. In recent years, the show spawned a bit of bad blood, including when Paulie got "terminated" at the beginning of season 6.

But the drama didn't end there: In December, TMZ reported that Teutul had sued his son for more than $1 million in stock options.
