Plans to demolish the Manor firehouse have floundered. Literally.
The annual Lenten fish fries, major events and a major money-maker there, has forced a delay in bringing down the house, which is outdated. (It IS about 150 years old.)
The fish fries will kick off on Ash Wednesday, Feb 17, and continue from 4 to 7 p.m. each Friday during Lent.
Food is cooked in the fire hall kitchen and transported next door to the borough hall, to be eaten there or taken out.
The dinners have been extremely popular for years. So the fire hall will remain standing until after Easter.
"The fish fry is a big deal in our town," said borough Manager Tom Costellic. "The firemen have been [eager] to get started on the new building, but all their cooking equipment is located in the old fire hall."
A new fire facility will be built next to the borough building. Firefighters hope to be in there by August or early September.
A distinguished school district is looking for distinguished graduates.
Riverview, in its 39th year, has started a Distinguished Alumni Program, to honor those who have achieved or accomplished something significant.
Nominees must have graduated from Riverview at least 10 years ago. The district plans to honor the first group -- five to 10 people -- this fall and hopes to do this every year.
Nominations began Monday and will run through March 31. Forms are available on the district's website, www.rsd.k12.pa.us.
The nominations will be reviewed by officers of student council, the Key Club and the junior and senior classes along with district principals and two faculty members.
Starting today, the Shop 'n Save on Route 30 in Unity could be called the Shop 'n Save and Cheer.
Co-owners Craig and Lisa Morella are opening a Hometown Fan Club next door, which can be accessed through the store or an outside entrance.
Sports merchandise will be sold there, from Pittsburgh professional teams and teams from Greater Latrobe and Derry Area high schools.
Seven percent of the wholesale purchases of Latrobe and Derry items will go to the respective schools.
Hometown Fan Club hours will be 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
