The North Hills High School wrestling team hit the trifecta and recorded what is believed to be a WPIAL first Saturday at the Chartiers Valley Duals.
The Indians had three wrestlers reach the 100-win plateau on the same day.
"It's not unusual for a team to have more than one wrestler join the Century Club during a season," North Hills coach Jose Martinez said. "But I've never heard of a team having three kids win their 100th match on the same day."
Seniors Cameron Weber (119 pounds), Ben Amrhein (160) and T.J. McElwaine (215) are the Indians newest members of the Century Club.
"Cameron and Ben began the day with 98 wins and T.J. had 97," Martinez said. "Cameron and Ben picked up their 100th win in our second match against Keystone Oaks. T.J. got his 100th win in our next match against Chartiers Valley."
North Hills had a 4-1 record and finished third in the 12-team field at the Chartiers Valley Duals. The Indians lost, 44-27, to Albert Gallatin in the semifinals. Butler captured the title with a convincing 60-15 victory against Albert Gallatin in the final.
"I already had plaques made up for Cameron, Ben and T.J.," said Martinez, when asked how they will honor the trio. "But I didn't bring [the plaques] to the tournament. I didn't want to jinx them. We will have a special ceremony for them on senior night on Feb. 12."
It is the second time in three years that North Hills has had three wrestlers reach the 100-win plateau in the same season. Alexander Martinez, Corey Perrotte and Adam Harold joined the Century Club during the 2007-08 season, but not on the same day.
Chartiers Valley's Tyler Wilps and Butler's Cole Baxter also joined the Century Club Saturday at the Chartiers Valley Duals.
Connellsville and Burrell are the favorites in the WPIAL team tournaments, which begin Tuesday. Connellsville (14-0), last year's runner-up, is the top seed in the 20-team Class AAA bracket. Three-time defending champion Burrell (9-7) is the top seed in the 12-team Class AA bracket.
"It's no surprise to see Connellsville as the top seed when you consider its past history in the tournament," Kiski Area coach Chuck Tursky said.
Connellsville is the only team in WPIAL history to qualify for the team tournament every year since the tournament started in 1979. The Falcons have won seven WPIAL titles, including three in the past six years. The only other team with seven titles is Washington. The Little Prexies have won seven Class AA titles, but none since 1999.
Connellsville, Canon-McMillan, Penn-Trafford and Kiski Area are the top four seeds. All four will serve as host sites in the first round and quarterfinals, which will be held Tuesday. Latrobe is the No. 9 seed. Penn-Trafford, Kiski Area and Latrobe are in Section 1.
The tournament begins tonight with four preliminary round matches in each class.
The City League championship match will be held Thursday with defending champion Brashear serving as the host. The Bulls (11-4), champions four of the past six years, will take on Perry (8-6). The two teams met 10 days ago in a regular-season finale with Brashear winning, 43-27.
