Feeding coal addiction

I was dismayed to read that Consol Energy was selling coal from its Bailey Mine in Greene County to markets in China. When are we going to learn that we can't continue to destroy the beautiful landscape of our once great commonwealth to feed the energy gluttony of interests outside of Pennsylvania?

Whether it's long-wall mining in Green County to power China's coal-fueled power plants or destroying our ridge tops in Somerset County to build windmills to feed the East Coast power grid, or fouling our ground water to drill for the Marcellus Shale, the result is the same; the destruction of Pennsylvania's environment for the sake of feeding the insatiable energy needs of interests outside of Pennsylvania.

Perhaps Consol Energy should consider changing their advertising from "America's On Switch" to "China's On Switch."

Ungreen development

Is it possible to look at this anticipated development ("Waterpark Planned For Mills Mall Site," Jan. 14) from another point of view?

What about all of the animals that are going to be forced out of their natural habitat? All across the nation people are constantly building, building and building, but no one stops to think about what they are doing to the ecosystem/animals.

Green jobs pay off

To all of the naysayers and critics of climate change and clean, renewable energy policies, I hope you read "Braddock Nonprofit Lands Jobs Grant," (Jan. 7). This is a win/win for the people and resources of this beautiful state.

The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act enables' us to train and put 120 people to work in green jobs weatherproofing homes. This is just the start of the "green jobs revolution" that we need in Pennsylvania.

Now more than ever we need to thank our elected officials, such as Rep. Mike Doyle and Sen. Arlen Specter, who have fought for legislation that puts a cap on carbon emissions, promotes the development of renewable energy and endorses a comprehensive renewable energy and efficiency plan.

We are finally beginning to act and not just talk about being responsible residents of our home. It's time we take our part in the "green revolution" and "become a national leader in green energy technology" to ensure the health and safety of our future generations.
