Jerome Barnes, Shady Side Academy

Last week: Barnes helped the Indians extend their winning streak to 10 with victories against Jeannette and South Allegheny in WPIAL Class AA Section 4.

Check this out: A 6-foot-3 senior guard, Barnes leads the Indians in scoring with 20 points per game. Also an excellent student, Barnes is attracting Division I attention, including from several Patriot League schools.

Is there a player in the NBA or college you would compare your game to? I think I play like Jerome Dyson from UConn. He's a good outside shooter, but he can also get to the hoop. Plus, he's a good defender.

Do you guys have the best team in Class AA? If we continue to improve and play to our capabilities, I think we have the potential to be the best team.

Who's the best player you've played against? Andre Dawkins. He's at Duke now.

Two things always in your refrigerator? Right now, nothing. (He laughs) Usually hot dogs and Juicy Juice.

People might be surprised to know that ... I'm a huge SpongeBob SquarePants fan and a huge Harry Potter fan, too.

Who is going to win the Super Bowl? Saints, definitely. I'm a pretty big Saints fan. I've been cheering for them since day one.

If you could go on a date with one person, who would it be? Probably Beyonce.

Madeline Hoopes, Latrobe

Last week? A swimmer, Hoopes won every event she entered in a meet against Laurel Highlands, including the 200 IM and three relays.

Check this out: Only a freshman, Hoopes has registered the WPIAL's fastest recorded times in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events this season -- beating her closest competitors by a wide margin.

How did you get your start in swimming? Actually I was in first grade and my friend started swimming. She said I should join, so I started swimming. I've been doing it ever since.

What is your favorite part of swimming? Probably my friends and the competition.

What is your daily routine? On Mondays and Wednesdays I wake up around 5:25 and lift, and then come to school. And after school, I go to practice for two hours.

What is your favorite event? Probably the 50 freestyle. I like sprinting. It's fast and short.

What are your future plans? I want to become a dentist, but I want to try my best to get a scholarship to swim at a pretty good program. I've been working hard.

Where is your ideal vacation spot? Somewhere with pretty nice beaches. I like the water a lot.

Who is your pick to win the Super Bowl? The Saints.
