McArdle Roadway was closed for a few hours Monday morning because of a mudslide near the top of the road that climbs Mount Washington.
Rob Kaczorowski, city public works director, said the slide occurred on the upper part of the road, just below the Grandview Avenue intersection.
The area was not part of the major improvement project that was done last summer to correct drainage problems that caused ice buildup and potholes on the road, he said.
That $1.5 million project has proven successful so far at eliminating the ice floes and giant potholes that caused several temporary closures of the road last winter. The entire stretch from the Liberty Tunnels to Grandview was resurfaced.
"We'll just have to keep an eye on it and hope it's not a recurring problem," Mr. Kaczorowski said of Monday's slide.
Steady rains over the weekend prompted the National Weather Service to issue a flood warning for much of the region.
The Mon Wharf will be closed today as the Monongahela River was predicted to rise to about 25.5 feet by evening. At 18 feet, water flows onto the Mon Wharf. At 22 feet, the Tenth Street Bypass is affected, and at 25 feet, the Downtown section of the Parkway East begins flooding.
