
Facing its stiffest test of the season, the Butler boys' basketball team once again passed with flying colors.
Bobby Swartwout scored 17 points and Class AAAA No. 2 Butler used a strong fourth quarter to defeat No. 4 Central Catholic, 58-46, last night in Section 3.
With the score tied, 37-37, after three quarters, the Golden Tornado (12-0, 5-0) outscored the visiting Vikings (9-3, 5-1), 21-9, in the final quarter to remain undefeated.
Butler connected on 9 of 12 free throws in the fourth quarter, including all six attempts by Nate Snodgrass, who scored 14 points.
Will Burgess scored all nine of Central Catholic's points in the fourth quarter and finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds.
? Dayne Smith scored 18 points to lead Class AAA No. 5 Hopewell (9-3, 4-0) to a 57-47 win against No. 3 Blackhawk (7-3, 4-1) in Section 2. Kevin Welsh chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds for the host Vikings, while Cory Ostach paced Blackhawk with 16 points.
? Trinity (9-2, 6-0) extended its winning streak to seven after edging host Belle Vernon (9-2, 2-2), 51-49, in Class AAA Section 5. Christian Capo netted 12 points to lead a trio of double-digit scorers for the Hillers, who battled back from a 10-point deficit after one quarter. Josh Pohlot scored 16 points for the Leopards, giving him 1,003 for his career.
? Jerome Barnes tallied 18 points and Geno Thorpe added 15 to lead Shady Side Academy (9-2, 5-1) to a 63-55 win at Greensburg Central Catholic (8-3, 3-2) in Section 4. Jesse Reed led the Centurions with 18 points.
? Class A No. 4 Vincentian (9-2, 2-0) fought back from 16 points down to defeat visiting Our Lady of the Sacred Heart (6-5, 2-1), 76-71, in Section 4. John Bray scored 21 points to lead Vincentian. Jim Orie's 37 points paced the Chargers.
? New Brighton outlasted Riverside in a thrilling Class AA Section 2 contest, upending the visiting Panthers, 82-80, in five overtimes. Josh McFrazier scored 31 points for New Brighton (7-5, 4-1) and Mason Marion netted 31 for Riverside (5-8, 1-4).
? Jack Counahan knocked down two free throws with five seconds remaining to give host North Allegheny (10-3, 3-2) a 66-64 win against Seneca Valley (6-4, 1-4) in Section 3. Counahan finished with 14 points for the Tigers, who outscored the Raiders, 40-24, in the second half.
? Chaquille Pratt scored 29 points, pulled down 20 rebounds and had 5 blocks to spark Class A No. 3 Lincoln Park (8-4, 3-0) to a 69-64 win against host Neshannock (9-4, 1-1) in Section 1.
