Q: Ray, will the fan demand for Dante Taylor at power forward and Gilbert Brown at small forward now end? The last three games has shown what coach Jamie Dixon obviously knew, the small lineup gives Pitt the best chance to win. Brown, Brad Wanamaker and Jermaine Dixon have all used the matchups to their advantage and haven't given much at all on the defensive end. Take the UCONN game, I don't know if Brown is as effective with Stanley Robinson on him as he was against the power forwards. It's just another example of how coach Dixon adapts his system to max his players talents instead of forcing his system on the players.
Ryan, Philadelphia
FITTIPALDO: Good points, Ryan. The obvious matchup problem for Pitt was its lack of size contending with Connecticut's big frontcourt. But that did not turn out to be a bad matchup at all for the Panthers, who pounded the glass in the second half and won the rebounding battle, 40-31. In turn, Pitt had quicker and more versatile frontcourt players who were able to maximize their mismatches. Gilbert Brown, for example, ran away from the Connecticut forwards who were trying to keep up with him and found himself open for a lot of outside shots. He knocked down a few i the first half to give Pitt a lead. Another example was the play Nasir Robinson made late in the game on his baseline drive. He is only 6 feet 5, but he used his quickness to his advantage by getting himself open for a shot at a crucial time in the game. Sometimes the perceived matchup problems for a team can turn into an advantage with proper coaching and execution by the players. Pitt did that to perfection against the Huskies.
