District Fishing Report: Jan. 8, 2010
Friday, January 08, 2010

Anglers are advised to exercise caution when ice fishing, especially since heavy snowfall can slow ice production and hide weak spots. Limited trout stockings by the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission will continue through next month. For a schedule as well as ice fishing and safety advice, visit www.fishandboat.com.

Lake Erie: Steelheading was practically nonexistent in recent days as tributaries are frozen and snow covered. Snowfall has slowed ice formation in Presque Isle Bay. Brian Ruland of Millcreek and other local ice anglers caught bluegills, crappies and some perch in mixed sizes in Misery Bay earlier this week.

Lake Wilhelm (Mercer County): Ice anglers were catching nice bluegills in "the stumps" in recent days.

Pymatuning Reservoir (Crawford County): A few anglers were ice fishing on the north end yesterday.

Lake Arthur (Butler County): Up to 30 ice anglers were on the Muddy Creek arm, 10 others were on Shannon Run, and a few more were on the Route 422 launch by the regional offices yesterday. A lot of bass, a fair number of crappies and a few northern pike were reported. Local bait shops reported running out of bait last weekend.

Harbor Acres Lake (Butler County): Ice anglers turned out after Tuesday's trout stocking.

Bessemer Lake (Beaver County): Trout were stocked Tuesday.

Glendale Lake (Cambria County): Small pickerel and panfish were hitting in some of the coves in recent days.

Duman Dam, Lake Rowena (Cambria County): Anglers were catching trout in recent days at 21-acre Duman and 13-acre Rowena.

High Point Lake (Somerset County): Legal-size northern pike up to 26 inches, pickerel up to 23 inches and perch were iced on tip-ups with shiners in recent days. The pike also were hitting on bigger jigging spoons.

Cranberry Glade Lake (Somerset County): Ice anglers were catching bluegills and small perch on maggots and waxworms.

Youghiogheny Reservoir (Fayette County, Maryland): Ice anglers caught a mixed bag of species from catfish to walleyes on the Pennsylvania and Maryland sides last weekend.

Spring Creek (Centre County): Good levels were reported yesterday. Nymphs and streamers were the best bet.

Deep Creek Lake (Maryland County): Walleyes were iced on tip-ups with minnows, jigging spoons and jigging Rapalas, and jumbo perch were caught on minnows, maggots and waxworms. Some of the walleye rigs also were catching large pike up to 30 inches.
