Powerade team title continues to elude WPIAL participants

The WPIAL's streak of futility increased to 10 years at the Powerade Christmas Tournament, which was held this past week. The previous WPIAL team to win a team title at the tournament was Connellsville in 1999.

Saint Edwards High School from Cleveland began the streak in 2000. Since then the team titles have been claimed by State College (2001), Walsh Jesuit ('02-03) from Ohio, Maryland's Mt. Saint Joseph ('04-05), Virginia's Christiansburg ('06)and Central Dauphin ('07-09) from outside Harrisburg.

Central Dauphin, from PIAA District 3, claimed its third consecutive title this past week with 174 points. Georgia's Collins Hill finished second with 147, while Christiansburg was third with 144.5. Connellsville finished fourth in the 44-team field with 143.5.

Six WPIAL wrestlers won individual titles: Derry's Jimmy Gulibon, at 112 pounds; Franklin Regional's Nico Megaludis (119), Shady Side Academy's Frank Martellotti (130), Derry's Travis Shaffer (135), Charleroi's Cody Wiercioch (152) and Connellsville's Nathan Gaffney (215).

Megaludis claimed his third Powerade title with a 2-1 rideout of Benton's Michael Rhone. Gulibon claimed his second title with a 9-2 decision against Blue Mountain's Corey Keener. Martellotti claimed his second gold medal with a 10-4 decision against Blue Mountain's Tyler Rauenhzahn.

Steve DeAugustino tournament

Bermudian Springs from District 3 won its fifth consecutive title at the Steve DeAugustino Holiday Classic at West Mifflin last week. The Eagles had 12 wrestlers place among the top six in their weight class, including champions Brad Farley (103), Noah Blasone (140) and Matt Wolf (189).

Bermudian Springs dominated the 25-team field with 276 points. Upper St. Clair was second with 198.5 points. The Panthers had champions in Mackenzie and Mike McGuire and Josh Tropp.

Mackenzie McGuire won at 119 with a 10-2 major decision upset of Bermudian Springs' Tanner Coyle, who entered the tournament as a two-time returning champion. Mike McGuire claimed the 125-pound title with a 6-4 overtime decision of Yough's Caleb Porter. Tropp beat Mt. Lebanon's Adam Kemerer, 3-0, at 135.

Shaler had two champions in Josh Fleming (171) and Jamal Conroy (285). Also winning titles were Thomas Jefferson's Patrick Slovonik (130), Penn Hills' Joseph Washington (145), Mt. Lebanon's Jack Hnath (152), Belle Vernon's Brian Deleonibus (160) and West Mifflin's Mark Centofanti (215).

Southmoreland tournament

Greenville dominated the Southmoreland tournament last week with nine wrestlers finishing among the top eight in their weight class, including three in the top three. Greenville had 219.5 points, while Kiski Prep from Saltsburg finished second with 157. WPIAL wrestlers who won titles were Burgettstown's Tyler Rommes (112), Baldwin's Fomba Sheriff (119), Norwin's John Pezze (125), Jeannette's Mike DePalma (130), Chartiers Valley's Tyler Wilps (171) and Valley's Kyle Dudley (189). Pezze claimed his second Southmoreland tournament title.

Manheim tournament

Kiski Area finished third in the 14-team field at Manheim with 152.5 points. Easton won the title. Zach Shannon (152) and Mike McCutcheon (160) won titles for Kiski Area. North Allegheny had a champion in Greg Gaus (103).

Coming up

The match of the week is at Hopewell Wednesday night where the Vikings, ranked No. 3 in Class AAA by the Post-Gazette, will play host to West Allegheny in a Section 5A showdown. Both have 1-0 records in the section.
