Suspended police sergeant pleads case with safety director
Thursday, December 31, 2009

City Public Safety Director Michael Huss today met with a suspended police sergeant accused of assault and said he will decide next week whether to uphold a decision to fire the sergeant.

Mr. Huss said after the meeting in his office that Sgt. Eugene Hlavac presented his version of the Dec. 18 confrontation with his ex-girlfriend, Lauren Maughan. Ms. Maughan said the sergeant dislocated her jaw with a slap.

Sgt. Hlavac has already been ordered to face trial on simple assault after the district judge reduced the charge from aggravated assault. This week, Police Chief Nate Harper suspended Sgt. Hlavac for five days pending termination.

Mr. Huss said today he would give his staff five business days, starting today, to investigate the incident further. He said they would try to talk to two witnesses.

Sgt. Hlavac's attorney has said two independent witnesses would give a different scenario than Ms. Maughan.

The sergeant and representatives from the Fraternal Order of Police did not comment after the meeting.
