What do 'rookie' honors say about draft picks?
Steelers Q&A With Ed Bouchette

Question: Ed, Mike Wallace has been named this year's Steelers rookie of the year while none of Mike Tomlin's top picks have yet been given this honor. Do you think this speaks highly of Tomlin's staff, that they can find talent deep in a draft or does it show that they are dropping the ball with their top picks?

-- Chris Palochak, Aliquippa

BOUCHETTE: I'm not sure it represents anything more than the late blooming of the first-round draft picks the past three seasons, one injury and Tomlin's hesitancy to throw rookies into the fray. Lawrence Timmons, who became a starter in his third year this season, did not play much as a rookie and punter Daniel Sepulveda won. Rashard Mendenhall's shoulder was broken in the fourth game last season and undrafted special teams leader Patrick Bailey won. This year, Ziggy Hood has seen play at defensive end but not enough to top what Wallace did as a receiver. The Steelers also have a scouting staff that has been relatively stable for a decade.
