Mt. Lebanon girls' basketball coach Dori Oldaker didn't set the bar too high for her team's game yesterday against Stockton St. Mary's, Calif.
"In the back of my mind, coming here and playing one of the best teams in the country on national television, I was hoping we don't get embarrassed," Oldaker said.
Despite 38 turnovers that might have led to just that, the Blue Devils acquitted themselves quite well.
Ranked No. 2 in the country by Maxpreps.com, St.Mary's (10-1) defeated Mt. Lebanon, 61-52, at the T-Mobile Invitational in Birmingham, Ala.
"Once we settled down and took care of the turnovers they were creating on us, I was just really proud of the way we competed and played hard," said Oldaker. "We played with a lot of hustle and heart."
Madison Cable had 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Blue Devils (5-2), who had a 34-18 rebounding advantage and shot 49 percent from the field. Lauren Arbogast had 16 points and Chelsea Apke 13 for Mt. Lebanon in a game shown on CBS College Sports Network.
Defending California Division 2 champion St. Mary's features Duke recruit Chelsea Gray (26 points yesterday) and California recruit Afure Jemerigbe (14).
"I was disappointed we lost, but I could see the fire in the kids' eyes," Oldaker said. "This is going to totally help us and our program in the long run."
Mt. Lebanon was within four in the third quarter and cut the deficit to five with less than 21/2 minutes to play.
"To have 38 turnovers and lose by nine to the No. 2 team in the country? I fathom to think what could've happened if we just settled down and took care of business," Oldaker said.
