High School Roundup: Mt. Lebanon improves to 6-0

Already considered the top boys' team in the WPIAL, the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils proved last night they can shine against elite competition outside of the area, too.

Evan Pierce's 17 points led a trio of Mt. Lebanon players scoring in double figures in the Blue Devils' 67-44 win against Miami Coral Reef in the first round of the Junior Orange Bowl tournament at Miami Dade College.

Coral Reef is the defending state champion in Florida's largest classification.

Paul Lang and Grant Latus each chipped in 16 points for the Blue Devils (6-0), while Alabama recruit Charles Hankerson led the Barracudas with 16.

Other top boys' games

• Tim Lackner and Will Burgess scored 16 points apiece to lead Class AAAA No. 2 Central Catholic (6-1) to a 72-40 win against Peabody (2-4) in the Gateway tournament. The Vikings limited Peabody to 31 percent shooting from the field and forced 22 turnovers. The Vikings face Class AAAA No. 3 Gateway (4-0) in tonight's final.

• Jordan Albert and Steve Limberiou each tallied 12 points to help Upper St. Clair (5-2) edge South Park (4-3), 71-51, in the Upper St. Clair tournament.

• Southmoreland (6-1) continued its hot start with a 61-48 win against previously undefeated California (6-1) in the Charleroi Federal tournament. Josh Millslagle paced the Scotties with 20 points. John Tyler led the Trojans with 11.

McConnell watch

• T.J. McConnell hit five 3-pointers and scored 36 points in Class AAA No. 1 Chartiers Valley's 66-56 win against Lake Stevens, Wash., in the San Diego Surf 'N Slam. Matt Noszka scored 11 points and Anthony Cersosimo added 10 for the Colts (6-0), who outscored Lake Stevens, 14-5, in the final quarter. McConnell is averaging 36.8 points per game.

Out of town

• Tom Droney scored 21 of his 33 points in the second half to push Class A No. 1 Sewickley Academy (5-0) to a 66-48 victory against West Springfield, Va., in the Pohanka Chantilly, Va., tournament.

Boys' star of the night

• Ryan Stanko's 34 points allowed Deer Lakes (4-2) to come from behind and defeat Riverview (1-5), 57-46, in the Riverview tournament. Stanko scored 25 points in the second half and helped the Lancers outscore the Raiders, 24-4, in the fourth quarter.

• The following players made four or more 3-pointers: Tevin Bettis, McGill-Toolen Catholic, Ala., 7; T.J. McConnell, Chartiers Valley, 5; Tim Lackner, Central Catholic, 4; Franzee Barlamas, Freedom, 5; Zach Barker, Kiski Area, 4.

Top girls' games

• In a matchup of top-ranked teams, Class A No. 1 North Catholic handed Class AA No. 1 Sto-Rox its first loss, 51-48, in the Mars tournament. With the Trojanettes (5-2) leading by one, Emily Matshner made two free throws with 3.3 seconds left to provide the final points. Lynzi Mueller scored 14 points and Kendall Hoffman added 13 for North Catholic. Dee Dee King scored a game-high 19 for the Vikings (6-1).

• Kelly Brennan had four 3-pointers among her 16 points to lead Class AAAA No. 4 North Allegheny (5-1) to a 63-40 win against Highlands (4-2) in the North Allegheny tournament. Alexis Aiken added 11 points for the Tigers, while Brittany Cook paced the Golden Rams with 13.

• Shannon Flament scored 16 points and Morgan Iacovino added 15 to help Charleroi (4-1) edge Carmichaels (5-2), 46-45 in overtime, in the Carmichaels tournament. Charleroi scored all five of its overtime points on free throws. Marissa Krall led Carmichaels with 14.

Back in the win column

• Diane DiLorenzo scored 10 of her 12 points in the first half to help Gateway (2-4) end a four-game losing streak by routing City League No. 2 Schenley (2-4), 49-22, in the Gateway tournament. The Gators once again played without standout sophomore Destiny Brown, who is out for undisclosed reasons.

Girls' star of the night

• Jenny Papich scored a game-high 21 points and added 9 rebounds and 8 blocks as Class AAAA No. 5 Fox Chapel (5-0) defeated Penn-Trafford (3-3), 62-37, in the Hempfield tournament.
